Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in March
Over the last few years, March has become a perennial powerhouse for movies, acting as almost a pre-curser to the summer movie season. This year is no different. There are a lot of interesting titles coming out this month. The most notable takeaway is the amount of big name directors that are releasing a film this month, with a number of Oscar winners and some of the best directors in the game today. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in March.
5 – A WRINKLE IN TIME (Ava DuVernay, March 9)
Early word of this movie is a little divisive, which is mildly worried, but still not enough to not be excited about this movie. Ava DuVernay is a great director who is still on the rise and this is her biggest and most ambitious film yet, as she attempts to make a movie that is based on a “unfilmable book”. The cast is great, with Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey leading the way, and the visuals look sensational. This is the movie that will elevate DuVernay to the next level in her already impressive career.
4 – UNSANE (Steven Soderbergh, March 23)
I didn’t know this movie even existed until about a week ago when I saw the trailer. Steven Soderbergh pushes the medium once again, as he makes a psychological thriller shot all on an iPhone and only in two weeks, which is insane. Soderbergh is always making unique choices as a director, both technically and narratively, and this looks like something he has never done before. Let’s see what Soderbergh has in store for us this time.
3 – THOROUGHBREDS (Cory Finley, March 9)
I saw Thoroughbreds in 2017 and I loved every minute of this movie. Set in upper-class suburban Connecticut, two teens (a devilish Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke) conjure up a scheme to murder someone that they think will solve all their problems. With wonderful performances from the entire cast, stunning cinematography, and a smart, chilling, darkly funny script, Thoroughbreds is a brilliant movie that shows us the dark side of upper-class.
2 – READY PLAYER ONE (Steven Spielberg, March 29)
Steven Spielberg has been on a role this decade. Since Lincoln back in 2012, Spielberg has been making some of the best movies of his career. Ready Player One looks reminiscent of 90’s Spielberg, as it has more of that fantastical feel and nostalgia look to it. With all the retro pop culture characters in the film, the necessary visuals, and the story of a lost kid trying to make it, who better than Spielberg to make this movie?
1 – ISLE OF DOGS (Wes Anderson, March 23)
Wes Anderson is one of true masters of our time. Nobody makes movie like him. Whether he’s making a movie about a dysfunctional family, a fox, a young romance, or a hotel, Anderson’s movies are always perfectly crafted, smart, and wildly hilarious and Isle of Dogs looks no different. Anderson returns to his stop-motion roots with this one, as a young boy lands on an island inhabited by dogs in search of his own dog. In usual Anderson form, the cast is spectacular, with a who’s who of actors lending their voices (even Yoko Ono is in the movie. Yoko. Freakin. Ono!) The animation looks absolutely stunning and the trailer promises a funny, emotional movie, with some small action thrown in. Isle of Dogs is my third most anticipated movie of 2018 and now that it just won Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival, my excitement is elevated to another level, which is why it is the best movie coming out in March.
